Atlantic. Great Migration. Highway. What remains.
About the work
50,831 +/- Dreams traces Black migration, belonging, and the human cost hidden inside the language of progress. The number is unstable because the record is unstable: homes counted, people uncounted, dreams impossible to measure.
The project moves from the Atlantic to the Great Migration and into the displacement created by American highway construction. Its newest chapter, Intentionality, 1960, looks closely at Chicago’s Dan Ryan Expressway and the Black neighborhoods altered in its path.
A stoop, doors, ironing boards, maps, suitcases, archival photographs, protest language, sound, and moving image turn the gallery into a threshold between home and removal.
